Audrey Sickle Cell foundation is a non - profit organisation hat champions the cause of sickle cell ictims in Nigeria, whose core objective is to actively raie awareness and educate the masses about sickle cell victims, as well as care - givers, friends, and families of sickle - cell warriors, on how to deal with the disorder and manage their wards.
We actively support and also advocate for Sickle cell warriors who are less privileged and ensure they get access to quality health care.
Audrey sickle cell foundation was established in 2018, and has been a movement for helping warriors within our organisation's capacity. So far, we have reached out to over 2500 warriors from all over the country. We have created massive awareness online and offline, and have over a million plus reads on our articles @operanewshubng.
Sickle cell disease is a preventable, yet irreversible debilitating blood disorder that causes the body to produce abnormal red blood cells. In sub-Saharan Africa, 10 -40% of the population have the sickle cell trait (carrier gene). In Nigeria, the Sickle Cell Disorder (SCD) and the resulting mortality rate is on the rise. This can be attributed to numerous reasons such as:
- Limited access to proper medical care.
- Poor socio-economic background of affected warriors.
- Poor commitment and action from government and stakeholders, amongst others.
As long as there is little effort towards combating the threat of Sickle Cell Disorder (SCD) in Nigeria, the mortality rate as a result of the disorder will continually be on the increase.
